About Loudoun Rugby

Loudoun Rugby is the only club in Northern Virginia that has teams from 1st Grade all the way to a Men's D3 team. We are proud to continue our work in supporting and fostering grass roots rugby in Northern Virginia.

Loudoun Rugby is a member of USA Rugby at the national level and Rugby Virginia at the state level.  We generally follow USA Rugby's season, game-play, and age/grade guidance in order to provide a uniform experience that is comparable to the rest of the leagues in the United States.

Teams
Our teams are constructed according to age level and are split between tag and tackle teams.

Tackle
Boys/Girls Youth Tackle - U12
Boys/Girls Middle School Tackle - U14
Boys/Girls High School Tackle - U16, 18U
Men's League

Tag
Co-ed Tag - ages 6-10

Coaches
All of our coaches are USA Rugby certified.  Some are parents who volunteered because their son or daughter loves the game and they wanted to lend a hand.  Others played rugby as kids or in college, or have connections with players/coaches on international teams, or even continue to play in the "old timers" leagues.

We are always looking for new coaches and we can help you get all your qualifications. Just get in touch!

Gameplay and Equipment
During the spring season we play 15s in the Tackle Teams.  This involves 15 players on each team (eight forwards, a scrum half, and six backs) playing two forty-minute halves.  In the youth leagues, if we are scheduled to play multiple games, then game time is reduced.  The only equipment that players need to bring are rugby-approved cleats (check with your coach, but some football cleats are not legal for rugby) and a mouth guard.  The club will provide your game shirt.  There are no pads/helmets.

Our Tag coaches focus on teaching the fundamentals of the game, with a focus on safety, and also having a lot of fun. The Tag teams participate in tournaments according to age groups, and the younger ages meet with other Tag clubs at the weekend to play round-robin series of games.

Loudoun Rugby Partners with DC Young Glory - Fox 5 News

Loudoun Rugby was recently featured on Fox 5 News for their partnership with Washington DC's Professional rugby team Old Glory.

Making Football Safer

Our Loudoun Rugby Coaches have been working with tackle football teams to help spread the news on "Safer Tackle Techniques". Loudoun Rugby and Central Loudoun Youth Football League partner regularly to help grow the game for both forms of football. We have helped train coaches and hundreds of boys and girls on proper rugby-style tackling in our "Heads Out Tackling Clinics".

Below is a link to the 2nd of a 4-part series produced by WTOP Sports that discusses how the two sports are helping each other.

Can better tackling technique make football safer?
